We are stoked to have delivered our 7th Annual Backyard Brewing Tournament, our biggest one yet!
With a record breaking number of entries from over 65 homebrewers from across the South West & Perth entering over 120 beers for judging.
“This year’s judging panel certainly had their work cut out for them. Not only did we receive our highest number of entries to date but the quality was also really high.” said Iliya Hastings, Owner Margaret River Brewhouse.
This year’s judging panel comprised of Margaret River Brewhouse’s own brewing cohort Caitlin Ellis, Joe Grieg & Magda Bustos Hevia, Artisans famed owner and brewer Brian Fitzgerald, WA brewing icon Jeremy Good - Cowaramup Brewery, Reuben Herriman – Senior Brewer with Running with Thieves, and beer journalist Jono Outred.
"The calibre of this year's entries were exceptional, which made our jobs difficult-but fun! We were blown away by the level of technical quality and originality so many of the homebrewers displayed" said Brewhouse Brewer Caitlin Ellis.
Fellow judge Reuben Herriman, Senior Brewer at Running with Thieves, said "It is always such a pleasure being involved in this tournament. The quality of the beers entered is always of such a high standard, which is a testament to the passion and skill of so many homebrewers these days."
"The vast array of entries, from the traditional to the more modern and experimental styles, makes for a fun and challenging day of judging. Many of the beers entered would sit happily alongside the best commercially available craft beers, which is reflected in the number of medals awarded during the judging."
The tournament culminated in a sold-out awards night on Friday 24 June, with entrants coming along to celebrate their achievements and meet like-minded, passionate amateur brewers.
Taking out 1st place and an epic prize pack, including having their beer brewed at Margaret River Brewhouse, served on tap as well as state wide distribution in cans, was Chapman Hill local Clayton Hyder and brewing partner Stuart Bremner with their American IPA called Dr Pat’s Medicinal Neck Oil.
“After entering a homebrew competition a few years back and getting slammed, we set our minds to learning as much as we could about brewing good beer.” said winner Clayton Hyder.
“We're so glad that all our hard work has paid off and we applaud the Margaret River Brewhouse for putting on a competition like this that encourages people to raise the standards.” Clayton said.
Taking out second place was local Margaret River homebrewer and past entrant Chris Jarrot (CJ) for his Fruited Beer called Betty Strawback and third place, Luke Sims with his Mad Dog Milk Stout.
A total of 17 Gold, 25 Silver and 22 Bronze Medals to entrants, the highest number of medals awarded since the inception of the tournament 6 years ago.
